David Byrne & St Vincent

I’m a big fan of collaboration.  It’s always interesting to see what someone else brings to the table. How do you change or evolve when working with a new partner or group?

As a notoriously huge Talking Heads fan, I went to see David Byrne & St Vincent a few weeks ago when they played the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn. David and St Vincent/Annie Clark are on tour promoting their current collaborative album Love This Giant

Since splitting with The Talking Heads, David has taken on an interesting solo career which has seen him get into world music and release a double disc album with Fatboy Slim based on the life of Imelda Marcos.  This new album is one of my favorite albums in a long time.  I’ve watched a lot of interviews with David & Annie who talk about their creative process and what each person came up with. The spunky 30 year old and the still energetic Byrne, who is 60, complement each other beautifully. For this album and tour they are also playing with a full brass band.

I’m often disappointed when I think about how I will probably never see a Talking Heads reunion.  But seeing David & Annie play those same songs, I didn’t really care anymore.  The music lives on and evolves.  I think their rendition of some of those songs beats the original versions.

NPR has a great behind the scenes look at how they worked on the choreography
